Businesses of all sizes located in declared disaster areas and private nonprofit organizations affected by declared disasters can apply for SBA disaster loans.

These loans can be used for:

• Personal or business losses not covered by insurance or funding from FEMA
• Business operating expenses that could have been met had the disaster not occurred

SBA loans include funding for physical damage, mitigation assistance, economic injury, and military reservist operating expenses (helping businesses who have an essential employee called to active duty).

You can also contact your state or territory’s emergency management agency to find out if there is any additional assistance for your local community.

HUD disaster recovery funds (CDBG-DR)

In the months after a disaster, HUD’s Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds often help in your community by providing extra support for long-term recovery. Learn more about HUD disaster recovery funds.

Some key points about these funds:

• A disaster must be declared by the President
• Congress must then decide to send funds to your community through HUD and your local government and organizations
• After Congress decides to allocate the funds, it can take over 6 months for those funds to reach your community
• You can’t apply for these funds directly through HUD. However, you can contact your state or local community development office (below) to find out what you might qualify for and how to apply.
