Immediate or emergency shelter

Locate options by zip code through the American Red Cross or by texting “SHELTER” and your zip code (for example, “SHELTER 01234”) to 4FEMA (43362). For Spanish text “REFUGIO” and your zip code. (Standard text message rates apply.)

Temporary or short-term housing

Register and apply at DisasterAssistance.gov or your local Disaster Recovery Center to see what relief is available to you.

If you were homeless before the disaster

If you were homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness before the disaster, you should also contact a homeless service provider in your local community.

HUD-assisted renters

If you received HUD-housing assistance before the disaster, you should still register and apply for FEMA assistance to see what help you may qualify for. If you need alternative housing due to the damage caused by the disaster, HUD will work alongside other federal, state, and local programs to see what you qualify for.

Public housing and housing choice vouchers

If you lived in public housing before the disaster and are now displaced, contact your local public housing agency (PHA) to determine next steps. If you receive a housing choice voucher, you should be in contact with your PHA and property manager.

Tribal lands

If you receive Native American housing assistance, contact your tribe or Tribally Designated Housing Entity (TDHE) to determine next steps.

Multifamily housing

Contact your landlord or property manager to determine your next steps. If you are unable to reach them, or have additional questions, you can also contact your project-based contract administrator (PBCA).
