I am at-risk for or currently experiencing homelessness, what should I do?

HUD supports many organizations that provide housing assistance and/or supportive services to people.
HUD is not a direct service provider. For direct assistance, please dial 2-1-1 and contact a homeless service provider in your area.

**If you are unable to get a response from 2-1-1 or receive a message that the service is not available from your location, you may go to: https://www.211.org/about-us/your-local-211 and enter your zip code to find the number for your local office.

  • Find a list of temporary housing in your zip code here.
  • Contact a homeless service provider in KS:
    • Wichita/Sedgwick County: For resources in Wichita/Sedgwick County contact the United Way of the Plains. Learn more at United Way of the Plains - Coalition to End Homelessness.
    • Greater Kansas City (KC) Area:
      For immediate homelessness resources, please consider contacting the Greater Kansas City Coalition to End Homelessness (GKCCEH), Continuum of Care (CoC). To learn more about their programs you may visit their website at KC homeless help or call 211 or 1-816-924-7997 to begin the intake process.
    • Kansas Statewide Homeless Service Providers: For immediate homelessness resources, please review the list of COCs to connect with the local agency. The full list of rural homelessness providers is in their online directory.

For veterans who need temporary housing shelter outside of normal business hours:

I am in search of affordable places to live, where can I get help?

HUD supports many organizations that provide housing assistance and/or supportive services to people.
HUD is not a direct service provider. For direct assistance, please refer to the following resources:

  • Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programs assist low-income individuals and families, the elderly, and disabled persons obtain affordable, decent, safe, and sanitary housing. The programs are administered by a local Public Housing Authority (PHA) who determine eligibility through an application process. The Public Housing Program provides PHA managed housing at local developments. The HCV program allows applicants to obtain housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants can find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. If you wish to apply for the HCV or Public Housing program, you can contact your local housing authority from this list PHA Contact Information or call (800) 955-2232 for help finding your local Public Housing Authority.

    Multifamily Housing provides subsidized apartments for rent to those who qualify based on income eligibility. Each apartment is privately owned and maintained; therefore, rules and regulations may vary. You must contact the individual property for additional information on vacancies and application procedures. A list of Multifamily properties can be found online. Please contact the property manager using the phone numbers provided on the site for availability and eligibility requirements.

  • The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) is a state agency that assists in implementing many housing programs. The KHRC administers the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program, which creates affordable rental housing within the state.
