HUD’s Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) provided the “Get Ready NSPIRE Series” in Spanish for the first time in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

HUD’s Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) assists in improving housing quality by performing accurate, credible, and reliable assessments of HUD’s real estate portfolio. The new NSPIRE model prioritizes health, safety, and functional defects over appearance.

The NSPIRE team provided two training sessions in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The training of February 22, 2023 was a hybrid training which offered a virtual option for those who could not come in person and provided live translation to Spanish via the Zoom Gov platform. The second session on February 23 was in person and was provided fully in Spanish.

Efraín Maldonado, HUD San Juan Field Office Director welcomed REAC Deputy Assistant Secretary, Ashley Leia Sheriff, Southeast Regional Administrator José Álvarez, and Deputy Regional Administrator Tiffany Cobb. Regional Administrator Alvarez provided introductory remarks and presented on HUD’s current work emphasizing HUD’s Strategic Goals and National Initiatives.

Overall, the sessions had a total participation of 81 in person participants and around 500 participants who joined virtually via Zoom. The audience consisted mostly of officials from public housing authorities, multifamily property owners and management, as well as inspectors and maintenance teams.

After the trainings, the REAC team along with Director Maldonado, Regional Administrator Alvarez, Deputy Regional Administrator Cobb, Public Housing Director Antonio Cordova. and local Public Housing staff, went on site visits in San Juan and Caguas to put into practice and demonstrate the new NSPIRE inspection model.
