On November 8, 2023, HUD Alabama Field Office Director Kenneth Free presented a $5.28 million check as part of the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP) to Selma Square Management. The funding will help make Selma Square Apartments more energy efficient and lower energy costs for tenants.

“The ability to bring in new, modern energy efficient equipment to upgrade the property from the foundation up is going to have a life-changing effect for everyone involved,” said Eric Burkett, Regional Manager at Olympia Management (parent company of Selma Square Management).

Mr. Free emphasized the long-term difference the property’s renovations will have on the community and the jobs it will bring to Selma.

“HUD is committed to modernizing our properties in a way that is sustainable for our environment,” said Mr. Free.

Selma Mayor James Perkins also spoke to the economic impact of $5.28 million will bring to Selma community stating it “will be hard measure” but it will be significant.

Melinda Williams, District Director for Congresswoman Sewell’s office, also expressed her enthusiasm for the project and wants to see more projects like this.

This is just one of many investments Selma has seen since catastrophic tornados hit the area earlier this year. GRRP is the first HUD program to simultaneously invest in energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, climate resilience, and low embodied carbon materials in HUD-assisted multifamily housing.
