Statement from HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge Commemorating Poverty in America Awareness Month

WASHINGTON - Today, Marcia L. Fudge, the 18th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued the following statement on the commemoration of Poverty in America Awareness Month:

“This Poverty in America Awareness Month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is reaffirming its commitment to ensuring everyone in America has access to all the opportunities our country has to offer. At HUD, we have an essential responsibility to help our nation’s impoverished families and children live full lives.

“A safe, stable, and affordable home is critical to moving out of poverty, but far too many people in America, and far too many of our children, lack access to housing. That is why HUD works to increase the supply of quality affordable homes, expand access to robust supportive services and job opportunities, and invest in community development programs that build neighborhoods full of the schools, grocery stores and resources needed to build for the future.

“I believe ending poverty is within our reach. Through strong investment, meaningful community engagement, and thoughtful policy, we can help people of all backgrounds secure housing and build solid foundations for themselves and the generations that will follow.”
