HUD Announces Transaction to Transform Over 950 Affordable Rental Homes in The Bronx

$218 million transaction will revitalize community in New York City

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is announcing today that it recently closed a transaction to rehabilitate and preserve 983 affordable rental homes at the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Union Avenue Consolidated property. These apartments include 18 buildings across seven developments in the Claremont Village and Morissania neighborhoods of the Bronx.

Union Avenue residents will receive extensive rehabilitation, including structural upgrades and the installation of broadband internet. Renovations to the property include the replacement of roofs, upgraded ventilation and elevator systems, resolving heating and plumbing deficiencies, and improving security measures. Additionally, this conversion will support upgrades to playgrounds, basketball courts, walking paths, and parking lots at these developments.

In alignment with HUD’s mission to increase energy efficiency and encourage energy generation, renovation plans include the installation of solar panels and LED lighting. Additionally, the installation of energy efficient windows will also help ensure better temperature control for residents. Each home will also feature new kitchens, equipped with stainless-steel, ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, and upgraded bathrooms that include WaterSense-certified toilets, new fixtures in the sinks and showers, as well as new vanities and flooring.

Finally, in collaboration with a NYCHA partner team, several social services programs will be available to residents after the conversion, including senior programming, benefits assistance, after-school programs, and healthy food distribution.
