On September
18, 2003, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
was recognized for exemplary utilization of woman-owned small businesses
by a federal agency. For the third consecutive year, HUD was presented
with the Frances Perkins Vanguard Award. The Small Business Administration
(SBA) presented the award to former Deputy Secretary Alphonso Jackson;
Ms. A. Jo Baylor, former Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged
Business Utilization (OSDBU) accepted the award on HUD's behalf.
The award was presented during the SBA's National Entrepreneurial
Conference & Expo, which coincided with the Agency's 50th anniversary.
HUD
has consistently been among the leaders in the Federal government
in promoting contracting with small, disadvantaged and woman-owned
businesses. Our commitment starts with former Secretary Mel Martinez's
goal of "Promoting Jobs and Economic Opportunities" and extends
to former Deputy Secretary Alphonso Jackson's initiation and leadership
of the annual goal setting process. These actions encourage each
Assistant Secretary to establish challenging goals for their respective
program activities. Also, they send a strong message to program
managers and contracting officials that the success of the small
business community is closely linked to the Department's goals and
mission. This award recognizes HUD's overall commitment to ensuring
the success of this important segment of America's economy.
With
the support of the Secretary, the Deputy Secretary, OCPO and the
program offices, OSDBU will continue to ensure HUD's success in
outreach and support of small businesses.
