Geographical Data Management and Analysis involve the combination of two disciplines:

Geocoding:

The process of assigning geographic coordinates (e.g. latitude-longitude) to street addresses, as well as other points and features. With geographic coordinates, the features can then be mapped and entered into Geographic Information Systems.

GIS:

Analysis that combines relational databases with spatial interpretation and outputs, often in form of maps. A more elaborate definition is that of computer programs for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, analyzing and displaying data about the earth that is spatially referenced.

ESRI ARCSDE 9.0

Product Description

ArcSDE technology enhances data management performance, extends the range of data types that can be stored in an RDBMS, enables schema portability between RDBMSs, and offers configuration flexibility. ArcSDE technology supports reading and writing of multiple standards including OGC for simple features, the ISO standard for spatial types, and the Oracle Spatial proprietary format (among other data storage options). ArcGIS 9.2, ArcSDE technology and ArcGIS Desktop have been incorporated into ArcGIS Server. ArcSDE users with current maintenance will receive ArcGIS Server Basic Enterprise at no additional cost. As a result, ArcSDE will no longer be sold as a separate product after December 31, 2006.
